Video // Update on "This Is Not a Passport Photo"

Hey friends! Just a quick update on "This Is Not a Passport Photo".

The documentary picked up the STORYHIVE Female Director's Edition top award for Alberta! The outcome is in no small part thanks to all of the work you did, voting and spreading the word! From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Earlier in March I had the wonderful opportunity to see the movie screened at the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival, alongside nine other female-directed shorts, and to attend a Q&A session with other STORYHIVE grant recipients to talk about our experience working with STORYHIVE and making a short film. A huge thank you to everyone who came out for the event, and to STORYHIVE and VIWIFF for hosting!

The movie will also be screened  in NSI Canada's Online Short Film Festival in the next month or so.

If you want to learn more about the project, you can read a couple of interviews with me and my friend, Basel (one of the stars of the film!), here:

Lastly, if you want to check out the documentary, you can watch it on YouTube (I've embedded the video below) or on Telus Optik TV's Video On Demand service!

Video // "This Is Not a Passport Photo" is now out!

Hey friends! Just a quick note to let you know that my short documentary about taking photographs for resettled refugees living in Edmonton – "This Is Not a Passport Photo" – is now out!

You can watch the full video below:

With the completion of the project, I'm now in the running to receive career training and a spot at the Banff World Media Festival – opportunities that would help me keep creating projects like this one. If you're at all moved by the film, I would love if you would take a moment to vote for my project here (no signup necessary!):

Just hit the yellow VOTE button in the top righthand corner, follow the quick instructions and you're done!

You can vote once per day today through Friday at 12:00pm PST.

Thank you all so much for your support of this project and what it stands for.

Events // Pearl's 90th Birthday

Earlier in the summer, my dear friend Marissa's granny, Pearl, celebrated her 90th (!) birthday surrounded by extended family and friends, and I was there to capture the day. Click through to see photos from an afternoon full of partying and love (yay!).

Video // The Miner's Cafe

Around this time last year, my friend Dayna and I packed our cameras and hiking gear and headed to the mountains. Our destination: Nordegg, Alberta – a little mountain town known for its mining history, its scenic views and, more recently, its pie.

The pie comes to the town by way of Blaine and Colleen, the hard-working women who run the new Miner's Cafe, an everything-from-scratch eatery located in the local heritage museum. On a sunny Saturday morning, Blaine and Colleen were kind enough to let us invade their kitchen and try our hand filming them at work. Results are below!

If you find yourself in Nordegg, or even in Nordegg's general vicinity, be sure to stop in for a slice of pie or two (they do serve a host of other delicious things – real meals included – if you're into eating more than just pie).

Thanks to Blaine and Colleen, for being so patient and accommodating through the day – you were great!

Video // Pizza Pool Party (Happy Birthday, Mel!)

Last summer, my friend Dayna and I brought our cameras along to her sister Mel's belated birthday party (an excellent combination of pizza, a pool, late-summer light, good music, and great friends). Over the course of the party, we pulled a few of Mel's friends aside to ask them to share, on camera, a wish for her year to come and one of their favourite memories of Mel.

Earlier this spring, Dayna and I cut the clips together to create this little video, which we're sharing on Mel's proper birthday. Happy birthday, Mel! May the year to come bring you even more pizzas, pool parties, and happiness.
